Your tan is the final touch in the contest prep process, completing the months of training, dieting, and posing practice.
The foundation of the tan is good skin prep. The tanning products could be JanTana, ProTan or Liquid Sun Rays. If you have never done your own spray tan, I would go ahead and hire a company rather than trying to do it on your own. It is a process, that can get quite messy, and for a beginner, best to hire out.
Here is a brief tanning procedure that I give to my clients as a pre-prep tanning skin preparation procedure to ensure that they have a flawless tan on the day of the show.
Tanning Procedure
- Stop wearing deodorant at least the day before the show. If you use a waterproof deodorant, stop wearing it 2-3 days before to allow the product to wear off in time for good application of the tanning product.
- Waxing, shaving or any type of hair removal, other than on the face, should be done the night before tanning. Any waxing for best results should be done 4-5 days before the show. If you are new to waxing do not use the show to be your first attempt. If you are a regular to waxing, most times, you will be okay. However, the skin does get more sensitive, during the time of prep.
- Scrub with exfoliating gloves vigorously for 2-3 days prior to starting the tanning procedure. The week before competition use Jan Tana Skin Prep or other skin body scrub, daily to remove dead skin and prepare for tanning. If you do not have any pre-scrub use your exfoliating gloves, dish soap or baking soda.
- The day you come to get your first application of tanner, scrub with gloves, and skin prep, or dish soap, or baking soda. DO NOT use deodorant, lotion or apply anything to the skin the day of tanning.
- Just before you come to tan, shower with Jan Tana Skin Prep to neutralize the skin’s pH and ensure even absorption of color. If you do not have pre-scrub use dish soap (regular dish soap, with no lotions in it, or baking soda) Scrub skin thoroughly and DO NOT forget to scrub neck, back (lats) and under your arms, and back of the thighs/inner thighs.
- Come with hair up and bring a shower cap to cover head. Wear a baggy T-shirt, and baggy pants or wear a robe. Black is the preferred color after tanning as other colors might get stained. NO SPANDEX ALLOWED! Most times, the tanning service company will provide a disposable bottom to tan in (if needed); (but most will tan 100% naked, to ensure even application) and men use their socks. Check with them to see what they provide, if you are concerned, and what other ideas, you might have to supply on your own.
They will always reach out with proper directions for best application of their product.
- Generally you will receive a coat the night before, sleep in your tan, and then another coat the next morning. There is not shower in between coats, unless, there is an issue (turning green, blotchiness), with your tan. This is when you would contact the tanning company and ask for directions. Each company has their own procedures when this happens. Do not feel afraid to reach out to the company is something is not quite right, or if you have concerns, or questions. Ask at your first tan, what is the procedure, in case, something may go wrong (ie turning green)
- Your tanning session will take 15-20 minutes, between tanning, and drying.
- Take care when using the bathroom, water splashing, and avoid sweating or humidity, as it may change the colour of your tan.
You have worked so hard to be there, that this is your moment to shine. Enjoy every moment as the day goes by very quickly.
